About CompTIA A+

CompTIA A+ is a vendor-neutral certification for IT support work. It has two exams, Core 1 and Core 2. Both must be passed, and both must be the same version. Version 15 launched on 25 March 2025: Core 1 is exam series 220-1201 and Core 2 is 220-1202.

Core 1 (220-1201) is a computer-based exam of at most 90 questions in 90 minutes. Question types include multiple choice with one answer, multiple choice with more than one answer, drag-and-drop, and performance-based questions in a simulated environment. The published score is a scaled score from 100 to 900. The Core 1 passing score is 675. CompTIA does not publish how many items are scored, how many points each item is worth, or a table from raw marks to the scaled score.

Core 1 domains and their share of the exam are Mobile Devices 13%, Networking 23%, Hardware 25%, Virtualization and Cloud Computing 11%, and Hardware and Network Troubleshooting 28%. CompTIA prints a troubleshooting methodology for training and states that the methodology itself is not on the exam.

Core 2 (220-1202) is a separate exam, also at most 90 questions in 90 minutes, with the same kinds of items. Its passing score is 700 on the scale of 100 to 900. Its domains are Operating Systems 28%, Security 28%, Software Troubleshooting 23%, and Operational Procedures 21%. This site describes Core 2 and does not include a Core 2 practice test.

CompTIA recommends 12 months of hands-on experience in an IT support specialist role. The exams are offered in English, German and Japanese. The practice material here is in English.
