About CompTIA Security+

CompTIA Security+ is a vendor-neutral certification for core security work: assessing an environment, protecting hybrid (cloud and on-premises) systems, applying governance, risk and compliance, and identifying and responding to security events. On 17 October 2026 the live English exam is version V7, series SY0-701, launched on 7 November 2023. Security+ V8 (SY0-801) is announced for on or around 17 November 2026 and is not the exam this guide describes.

SY0-701 has a maximum of 90 questions, mixing multiple-choice items with performance-based tasks, and a time limit of 90 minutes. There is one clock for the whole exam. The five domains and their weights on the V7 page are General Security Concepts 12%, Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations 22%, Security Architecture 18%, Security Operations 28%, and Security Program Management and Oversight 20%.

The result is a scaled score from 100 to 900. The passing score published for SY0-701 is 750. CompTIA says the scaled score comes from a mathematical algorithm applied to what would otherwise be a percentage, and it does not publish how many questions must be correct, how items are weighted, or a table from raw marks to the 100–900 scale. Passing scores are set by statistical analysis and can change.

The V7 page lists English, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Thai. English is scheduled to retire on 11 June 2027. CompTIA recommends CompTIA Network+ and two years in a security or systems administrator role. A CompTIA article on the V7 exam says the certification is valid for three years and can be renewed with continuing education or a higher-level CompTIA certification.
