About FE Exam

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam is the usual first exam toward licensure as a professional engineer in the United States. NCEES designs it for people who are close to finishing, or have recently finished, an undergraduate engineering degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited program. Each licensing board decides who may sit and what a pass means for that board. The exam is in English, computer-based, and given year-round at Pearson VUE test centers approved by NCEES. The fee paid to NCEES is $225.

NCEES gives the FE as seven separate exams: Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Computer, Environmental, Industrial and Systems, Mechanical, and Other Disciplines. Each exam has 110 questions. Other Disciplines is the exam for programs that do not have one of the six named exams; NCEES reports its results broken out by degree, including architectural, biological, engineering physics and engineering science, general engineering, materials, mining and mineral, naval architecture and marine, and nuclear. A person chooses one discipline when registering. This site's practice test is FE Civil only. The other six are described here and are not set as tests.

The FE Civil specification in force began with the July 2020 examinations. It is a closed-book computer-based test. The only reference in the exam is the current FE Reference Handbook, supplied on screen as a searchable PDF. The exam uses both SI and US customary units. Most items are multiple choice with one correct answer. NCEES also uses multiple-correct items, fill-in-the-blank numeric items, point-and-click items, and drag-and-drop items. Every item is scored right or wrong, with no partial credit and no deduction for a wrong answer.

The appointment in the May 2026 NCEES Examinee Guide is 5 hours 55 minutes: 2 minutes for the nondisclosure agreement, 8 minutes for the tutorial, 5 hours 20 minutes of exam time, and a 25-minute scheduled break. The whole exam time is given at the start. There are no separately timed knowledge areas. After about half the questions, the examinee reviews and submits that half, and cannot return to it. The scheduled break is optional and does not add time to the exam clock. A limited number of the 110 questions are unscored pretest items, mixed in and not labeled.

Results are pass or fail, usually available in 7 to 10 days in the examinee's MyNCEES account. The number of correct answers is converted to a scaled score that adjusts for small differences in difficulty between forms. That scaled score is compared with the ability level subject-matter experts set as the passing standard. NCEES does not publish a universal raw cut score, because the raw number that matches the standard moves slightly with the form. There is no quota for how many people pass. Someone who does not pass receives a diagnostic report by knowledge area on a 0 to 15 scale; that report is not a raw score and cannot be turned back into the passing standard. The practice test on this site reports the raw number correct. It does not make the pass or fail decision.
