About PMP
The Project Management Professional (PMP) exam is PMI's certification for people who lead and direct projects. The July 2026 examination content outline is the pattern used here. The exam is not written to one edition of the PMBOK Guide; the outline says the guide and the exam are different documents, and candidates apply project practices to scenario questions.
The sitting is 180 questions in 240 minutes. Ten of the 180 are unscored pretest questions, placed at random, so 170 questions affect the result. PMI does not publish how many items sit in the case-study block or in the later independent questions, and it does not publish a separate timer for either block. Two 10-minute breaks are described: one after the case-study section and one about halfway through the independent questions. Starting a break locks the questions already completed.
Domains are People 33%, Process 41% and Business Environment 26%. Predictive approaches are about 40% of the items. The other 60% is split between adaptive (agile) and hybrid approaches, and the outline does not fix that split. Item types include single-answer and multiple-response choice, matching and drag-and-drop, graphic items, case sets, pull-down lists and point-and-click items. The last two, and hands-on tool items, appear on the computer-based exam only.
The result is pass or fail. The score report also gives diagnostic information for each domain. The passing standard is set by psychometric analysis against the criteria for an experienced project manager. PMI does not publish a raw cut score or a fixed percentage. This site reports raw marks out of 180, by domain, and does not turn those marks into a pass decision.
